In an era where financial literacy is the cornerstone of economic empowerment, Investing is no longer the exclusive domain of experts or the affluent; it is a vital tool for individuals across all walks of life to secure their financial futures. Yet, the complexity of financial markets, coupled with the proliferation of investment options, often leaves many hesitant or vulnerable to misinformation. Recognising this gap, the training and placement cell took a commendable step forward by organising the SEBI Investors Awareness Program on 2nd July 2025, led by the distinguished Ms Padmavathi Selvam, aimed to demystify the world of investments and equip participants with the knowledge and confidence to make informed financial decisions.
The session began with a comprehensive overview of the Indian financial ecosystem. Ms Selvam illustrated the roles of various institutions, including SEBI, stock exchanges, mutual funds, and regulatory bodies and how each contributes to a transparent and secure investment environment. Participants were introduced to the spectrum of investment avenues — from traditional options like fixed deposits and government securities to dynamic instruments such as stocks, mutual funds, and exchange-traded funds (ETFs). She elaborated on common investment traps, including Ponzi schemes, misleading advertisements, and market rumours. Through real-life examples and case studies, participants learned to identify red flags and the importance of verifying information through credible sources.
Ethical investing was another key theme. Ms Selvam encouraged investors to consider environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors, aligning their portfolios with values that promote sustainable and responsible growth. Ms Selvam conducted quizzes, scenario-based discussions, and Q&A sessions that challenged participants to apply their newfound knowledge. One memorable segment involved a simulated investment exercise where attendees formed groups to create diversified portfolios based on hypothetical profiles. This hands-on activity reinforced concepts like asset allocation, diversification and risk management in a practical context.
The program organised by the training and placement cell is part of the broader mission to empower the students with clarity, caution, and competence in navigating the investment landscape.
